President Jackson II Multimode CB Radio

Welcome to the independent Citizens Band radio website

"Citizens' Band radio (CB) is a licence free system for short range (5-10 miles), simplex radio communications between individuals on a selection of 80 FM channels within the 27 MHz (11 meter) band. Citizens Band radio should not be confused with amateur ("ham") radio. Similar personal radio services exist in other countries, with varying requirements for licensing and differing technical standards. In many countries (including the UK since the 8th of December 2006), CB does not require a license and, unlike amateur radio, it may be used for commercial communication.

In recent years, CB has lost much of its original appeal due to the advancement in state of the art technologies and changing social values. With the advent of mobile phones and the Internet, nearly everyone has the ability to communicate with friends and family in a secure and efficient manner almost anywhere in the world. With the unpredictable and changing nature of radio wave propagation at 11m (due to the 11 year Sunspot cycle), it can (at its worst) be easier to talk to someone on the other side of the world, than it is to talk to someone down the road."

This is a completely independent UK based website, dedicated to the discussion and promotion of Citizens Band radio in the United Kingdom. The aim of the site is to provide a resource for people either coming back to CB or getting into it for the first time, as well as those who have been using CB radio for years. By sharing information on this website, hopefully we can promote and encourage CB in the UK.

Mobile phones and internet chat rooms may have put a nail or two in CB's coffin, but it ain't dead yet. Many people feel that CB was 'shanghaied' in the early days by people who really wanted chat rooms and free weekend calls on their mobiles phones, well now they've got 'em. So lets see if we can give CB radio a new identity.

CB Radio has many, many modern uses that can save the user money and enable 'open channel' type communications that would be either very expensive to duplicate with mobile phones or would even be impossible without CB radio.

In addition to this, there is a large number of illegal SSB radio users who "freeband" on 11m and would really like for it to be legalised. This is something that some of our European neighbours have had (legally) for years and a lot of people in the UK think it's about time we had a similar facility. After all, the Europeans can legally transmit towards us, we just can't legally transmit back!

It's worth remembering that without the
illegal AM CBers back in the late 70's, and the courageous protest marches in 1980/81 we may not have had legal FM CB today in the UK. What's Illegal today may be perfectly legal tomorrow. Come in and join the conversation in the forums or share your experience by writing a technical article or a review of the equipment you use.

This website has been setup to provide a resource for people using UK FM CB radios and those interested in using them again. It's a place to share information and discuss modern uses of UK CB radio equipment.

All CBers are welcome! biglaugh.png
